Mamihlapinatapai is a word from the Yaghan language of Tierra del Fuego, listed in The Guinness Book of World Records as the “most succinct word”, and is considered one of the hardest words to translate. It describes “a look shared by two people with each wishing that the other will initiate something that both desire but which neither one wants to start.” (via Martin)

There’s also a great book out that looks at the issues of Atlanta’s growth from artists and the people’s perspective called RE: constructing Atlanta:

www.reconstructingatlanta.com

The Reconstruction Era is not just Civil War history. Atlanta has been reinventing itself every 10 years since the 1800s.

RECONSTRUCTING ATLANTA: A Contemporary Continuum represented a synchronistic network of exhibitions and events that examined the real and imagined nexus of art, architecture and urban design. This continuum included contemporary art projects organized by the GSU Welch School Gallery, Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery, the Youth Art Connection Gallery, Frequent Small Meals, Atlanta Celebrates Photography, the College of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Metropolitan Public Art Coalition and the Museum of Design City of Neighborhoods program, as well as art departments at Grady High School, Tri-Cities High School and South Atlanta School of Engineering and Computer Sciences. RECONSTRUCTING ATLANTA intended to actively connect with current urban design and redevelopment initiatives such as the Beltline transportation project that recognize the significance of socio-cultural challenges and creative opportunities at the heart of our growing city.

Hey Guys, I’m doing a big project on possibilities and problems within the urban development of Atlanta. I’m planning on creating some printed material with interviews from residents, urban planners, traffic engineers and just smart people with a well presented perspective. Then I thought I’d let it take flight as an open forum via the web. I want the vibe to be hopeful, not ranty- so first I’m planning on getting in touch with the smart folks who presented at this month’s pecha kucha,

but I was wondering— do any of you have suggestions on who I could talk to?
