On any given Saturday night, there are 3 show that someone like us could foreseeably go to. There are more, but there will be three that you just sort of know about without having to find out (it’s magic). They are different each week, but they are all the same. Tonight The Mountain Goats and Final Fantasy are at the Variety Playhouse (the best show), The Bridges and Ponderosa at the Star Bar (the people you know), and J. Tillman at the Earl (the lesser known and therefore the better best show).

Then, if you’re not lucky enough to know any after parties and you’re not alone/ on a first date (and would consequently go home after the show), you will end up in East Atlanta.

East Atlanta is an open sewer of miscreants and perverts and dope peddlers on Saturday nights. At the 529 you will see the people that went to the Variety and Star Bar. “Hipsters”- young bourgeois bohemians with PBRs and boys with silly hats and girls with silly boots- except only the minority still live off their parents money, because this is Atlanta and not Brooklyn. In The Glenwood there will be the 30 somethings who live in the neighborhood. Tom will have his record player on the street at Feed Your Head Music and will be playing something with horns from the 70s. Marys will be absolutely packed with horny gay men, two straight ones and the most attractive females outside of Buckhead. The Graveyard will be hosting some benefit and will have strange music. The cast from Vampire Diaries will be there- The gay guy from The Real World VII will be there and there will be dubstep or some DJ from Miami. At Gravity Pub, they will be playing death metal- trying (and failing) to scare away the Buckhead- carpet bagging-douches coming in from The Glennwood (on the left) and The Graveyard (on the right) from their oasis of authenticity. At East Side Lounge there will be drunk 20 year olds standing at the door begging to be allowed in. Inside, Cassie will be serving Black Label Canadian Beer for $2. There will be a line at the bathroom consisting of a 30 year old white guy with scruff and a blazer, a 25 year old black guy with dreds, and there will be a faint smell of marijuana. For $3, D will let you take shots out of her clevage. At My Sister’s Room (Calavinos by day), the scariest, most aggressive lesbians around will violently dance on a huge wooden floor to mediocre mid-tempo Euro techno+rap. Flat Iron stops serving early and thier bathrooms are closets with misspelled vandalism. The Earl will have smokers outside till 1.

Spilling out into the street, lights, the hearse in front of The Graveyard- cars parked where cars should not be parked- that lot across from what used to be Cenci’s where the carjacker was shot. You will percieve this as a spectacle. You will remember Halloween and New Years in EAV. You will be proud of the PBR wall paintings. You will see beautiful girls stagger into the wrong guys arms. You will feel at the same time a great hate for your wasted life and a great joy that you have participated in something unique and strange and frightening and new.

When you leave, you will see cops outside of the Earl and The Graveyard- and locals will turn left on Brownwood to get home. Non-locals will take Moreland and see two more cops at the gas stations near I 20. The line at the McDonalds will be wrapped along the building by 1am. By 3 the breakfast menu starts- or maybe you’re at the Huddle House a mile south wondering if the Breakfast Scramble is a good idea. It isn’t.

At 6- Joes will be open, but the streets will be empty by 4.

That is a Saturday night in East Atlanta Village.

THE warehouses and industrial buildings to the west of downtownAtlanta have not had the benefit of a concerted attempt by the city at urban revitalization. Instead, the West Side has lately given rise to a sort of ad hoc group of contemporary art galleries that have styled themselves as a more intellectual alternative to the city’s designated downtown art district, Castleberry Hill…

i don’t mean tumblrs as in people you like or your pals or whatnot. that’s what your tumblr crushes are for. these are 13 tumblrs who post excellent, insightful content and should not be missed on your dashboard. now, in no particular order.

1. steampoweredmedia: i’ve only been following this tumblr for a few days and i’m already enamored by his taste and his stories and his photos. also, as a fellow gainesville resident myself, i have to have love for this blogger.

2. locomotivehootenanny: Elizabeth posts the best things, the most thoughtful stories to accompany some of the most interesting photos I’ve seen in a long time. Follow if you like history and amazing family photos.

3. thebloomsburytwo: walkwhilereading and printedandbound have a book club. i know. it’s awesome. if you love reading and literature, you need to follow this.

4. thomaswheatley: Thomas consistently posts amazing music, videos, photos, and has impeccable taste. a pleasure to follow.

5. thisistheglamorous: we’re all following David right? his posts are always clever, funny, and he has probably the best music taste on tumblr. if you’re not following him, you have been living under a rock and i am sorry for you.

6. nerdboyfriend: if you like nerdy men, you need to follow this. so, so well done. also, if you like men’s fashion.

7. roamin: i love roamin so much, for ages now. good music, good links, good reviews, excellent photos as this tumblr is also connected to photons, one of the best tumblrs for original photos by tumblr users.

8. garconniere: julia and i have been friending it up via the internet for years now and she has always been one of my favorite bloggers. she is so beautiful and intelligent and has fantastic taste in everything. such a wonderful woman.

9. deadpresidents: i am such a nerd but so are so many of you. deadpresidents is anthony bergen’s tumblr about presidential history and anecdotes. not only is it interesting but it so well written. if you like history, or even if you don’t, you should follow this because you might find yourself with a new interest.

10. shaneguiter: god, shane posts such wonderful photos and posts about technology and new media. he also has impeccable taste in music (common thread here?)

11. chastity: one of my favorite tumblrs. intelligent posts about feminism and lgbtq issues and self image, not to mention some of the most provocative and wonderful images i’ve seen in a while.

12. smut-to-go: i only recently started following smut-to-go but fell in love with the entire experience of this tumblr. not only wonderful images which abound here on tumblr but thoughtful poems and quotes, and everything is just so perfectly chosen that i look forward to these posts on my dashboard.

13. slackmo: and the best for last. i’m not even going to lie, i’m pretty sure that slackmo is my favorite tumblr of all and i don’t say that in the way i say that about my friends’ tumblrs but because i enjoy every single thing he posts. he can take a simple reblog and turn it into a masterpiece with the snarkiest of comments. funny, intelligent posts and excellent taste make this a well-rounded and fun tumblr to follow.

The respect she shows history, though, is the kind of respect you show the flag when you soak it in kerosene and touch a match to it. “[W]e tried growing government to save the economy back in the 1930s, and it didn’t work then either,” Ms. Palin writes. It is a modest assertion, though, compared to the astonishing finding Ms. Palin reveals in the next sentence: “Massive government spending programs and protectionist economic policies actually helped turn a recession into the Great Depression.” If this is, as it seems, a reference to the New Deal, then history, per Ms. Palin, sometimes goes backwards, with the WPA and its ilk actually bringing about events that took place before they were launched.
